Pickpocket

(1959)Directed by Robert Bresson75 minCrime, Drama
“To reach you at last, what a strange path I had to take.”

Michel (Martin LaSalle) starts picking pockets on a lark, and he cannot say what drew him to it. Robert Bresson films the work in close shots of hands and coat pockets, with LaSalle speaking in the same flat voice throughout. Michel's mother is gone, Jeanne (Marika Green) and his friend Jacques are urging him to stop, and a police inspector is already watching him.
