Picnic

“Unsurpassed! Unforgettable!”

It is Labor Day in a small Kansas farm town, and Hal Carter (William Holden), a broad-shouldered drifter, drops off a freight car to look up Alan, a college classmate whose father is the richest man around. He arrives in the middle of the town's picnic, where Madge Owens (Kim Novak), the prettiest girl in town, is already spoken for. Joshua Logan, adapting William Inge's play, keeps the camera close on the town's front porches and picnic grounds.
