Miranda (Anne-Louise Lambert) is a boarding-school girl in Australia in 1900, one of the pupils the strict Mrs. Appleyard (Rachel Roberts) takes to a Valentine's Day picnic at Hanging Rock. Peter Weir follows the afternoon, when Miranda and several others wander off against the rules and a teacher goes missing too. The loss reaches the schoolhouse, where Mrs. Appleyard and the girls left behind are held to each other by what they cannot explain.
