Pieces of April

“She's the one in every family.”

On Thanksgiving morning, April Burns (Katie Holmes) is in a low-rent New York apartment, a turkey on the counter and an oven that won't light. Her mother Joy (Patricia Clarkson) has a fatal cancer, so April has invited the family she long ago drifted from, who are driving into the city from the suburbs. Peter Hedges has her knocking on neighbors' doors for help, and April keeps working at the dinner.
