“The man the Gestapo hates!”

In the years just before the Second World War, Professor Horatio Smith (Leslie Howard), an absent-minded Cambridge archaeologist, brings a party of British and American students to Germany for a dig. The Nazis fund his work, convinced he is hunting for proof that German civilisation has Aryan roots. Howard also directs, and Smith's real purpose is getting prisoners out of the camps, with General von Graum (Francis L. Sullivan) close enough to ruin it.
