John Forbes (Dick Powell) is an insurance man with a wife, a son, and a steady job, and he has started to wish for a more exciting life than the one he has. That wish takes him into the affairs of an imprisoned embezzler, the embezzler's model girlfriend Mona Stevens (Lizabeth Scott), and a violent private investigator named MacDonald (Raymond Burr). André de Toth's film is about how little it takes for an ordinary, comfortable life to start coming apart.
