Franz (Jean-Louis Trintignant) is a seedy detective who wants the job and the money, so he accepts when the banker Georges de Saxe (Philippe Noiret) hires him to find his daughter Carolina (Anicée Alvina). Georges fears kidnappers and wants her kept safe. Alain Robbe-Grillet sends Franz out on the search, and he keeps taking whatever the case puts in front of him.
