In New York City, Kate (Catherine Keener) and her husband Alex (Oliver Platt) sell antique furniture and own the apartment next door, where an elderly woman named Andra (Ann Morgan Guilbert) lives until they can take it over. Nicole Holofcener follows the couple as they butt heads with Andra's granddaughters, Rebecca (Rebecca Hall) and Mary (Amanda Peet). Rebecca is patient and dutiful, Mary is sharp and unforgiving, and Kate keeps stepping between them.
