“You have to see it to belove it!”

Apple Annie (Bette Davis) sells apples on a New York street corner and has let her daughter, raised abroad, believe she is a wealthy society lady. When word comes that the daughter is marrying into Spanish nobility, Dave "The Dude" Conway (Glenn Ford), a gangster who counts on her apples for luck, is talked into the scheme by his girlfriend Queenie (Hope Lange). Frank Capra gives them a few days to fake it, with a count and his family arriving to see for themselves.
