Pope Joan

Johanna von Ingelheim (Johanna Wokalek), born to an English father in the German city of Ingelheim in the 9th century, learns to read in a world that gives books to men only. She takes a man's clothes and a man's name, and her learning carries her all the way to the Vatican, under Pope Sergius II (John Goodman). Sönke Wortmann gives her a quiet bond with Gerold (David Wenham), a love that has no place in the life she has chosen.
