Portrait of Madame Yuki

(1950)Directed by Kenji Mizoguchi85 minDrama

A young woman starts work as a servant in the household of Yuki Shinano (Michiyo Kogure), a noblewoman who lives in apparent luxury. She soon sees how unhappy her mistress is behind the good manners and fine rooms, and her husband Naoyuki (Eijirō Yanagi) is part of what she notices. Mizoguchi's film is about how much grief a person can carry in silence, and how well a polite surface can hide it.
