“Light after darkness”

Juan (Adolfo Jimenez Castro) and Natalia (Nathalia Acevedo) have moved their city family into the Mexican countryside, and the film never settles whether that world and theirs can live side by side. Carlos Reygadas, drawing on the places he has lived, cuts from the Mexican hills to scenes set in England, Spain and Belgium. Under all of it runs one question the film puts plainly: whether two ways of living can coexist or only push each other out.
