“Having a wonderful time, wish I were here.”

Suzanne Vale (Meryl Streep) is an actress with a drug problem who keeps insisting things are fine. To stay employable she has to move back in with her mother, Doris Mann (Shirley MacLaine), a performer who has never stopped being the center of the room. Mike Nichols directs Carrie Fisher's script, drawn from her own novel, and plays the mother and daughter's sniping like a duet.
