Poverty and Nobility

(1954)Directed by Mario Mattoli90 minComedy

In the Naples of 1954, Don Felice Sciosciammocca (Totò) and his neighbor Pasquale (Enzo Turco) scrape by on almost nothing, until a young nobleman named Eugene offers them money to pass as his titled relatives. He wants to win Gemma (Sophia Loren), the daughter of a cook who has lately grown rich. Mario Mattoli films it from the old Scarpetta play, and the last thing on screen is Totò in a borrowed costume, still looking at the table.
