“More seductive than sex… More addictive than any drug… More precious than gold. And one man can get it for you. For a price.”

Pete St. John (Richard Gere) sells candidates to voters for a living, and he wants every client he has across the country to win. When his old friend Senator Sam Hastings quits the Ohio race, Pete is drafted to help an unknown businessman named Jerome Cade take the seat. Sidney Lumet follows the consultant through polling data, television spots and strategy sessions, showing how power shapes the people who hold it and the people it is aimed at.
