“What went down on the way to the top.”

It is the 1992 presidential primary season, and Henry Burton (Adrian Lester), a young and gifted organizer, signs on to run the campaign of Governor Jack Stanton (John Travolta). Stanton has a wandering eye and a wife, Susan (Emma Thompson), who is every bit as ambitious. Mike Nichols, working from Elaine May's script, keeps the camera close to the people around the candidate rather than the candidate himself.
