“Any way they slice it, it’s going to be murder”

Mob men who go to Kansas City to collect from a meatpacker tend not to come back, and the Chicago outfit has already lost one. So Nick Devlin (Lee Marvin) goes to settle it with Mary Ann (Gene Hackman), who runs the slaughterhouse and keeps girls like Poppy (Sissy Spacek) in pens for sale. Michael Ritchie sets two hard men across a table, each sizing up what the other will take.
