On Primrose Hill, the poor end of town, Ellie May Adams (Ginger Rogers) shares a crowded house with her drunken father, her younger sister, a mean-spirited grandmother, and her easygoing mother Mamie (Marjorie Rambeau). Gregory La Cava follows her as she meets Ed Wallace (Joel McCrea), a hard-working man, and marries him without telling him where she comes from. Ellie May is determined not to end up like the women in her family.
