Alvin (Paul Rudd) took the summer job painting yellow lines down a Texas highway so he could have some quiet and send money home. He gets his brother-in-law's younger brother Lance (Emile Hirsch) as a partner, and the two of them share a tent and the same long stretch of road in 1988. David Gordon Green sets them down in the burned woods outside Bastrop, where being alone and being stuck together turn out to be hard to tell apart.
