Cal Bruner (Steve Cochran) is a Los Angeles police sergeant who wants more than a cop's pay. When one of the marked bills from a $300,000 bank robbery surfaces in a drugstore theft, he and his partner Jack Farnham (Howard Duff) follow it to a nightclub and the singer Lilli (Ida Lupino). Don Siegel puts the whole story on the money itself, a few bills passing from hand to hand and showing what each person will do for them.
