Profound Desires of the Gods

Kariya (Kazuo Kitamura) is a Tokyo engineer who wants one thing from the tropical island he has been sent to: a well dug deep enough to power the sugar mill. The islanders around him belong to the Futori clan, led by Nekichi (Rentaro Mikuni), and they live by customs that have no place for his drill. Shōhei Imamura spent eighteen months on this production, and Kariya's job hangs on whether the mill ever gets its water.
