Prospero's Books

“A magician's spell, the innocence of young love and a dream of revenge unite to create a tempest.”

Prospero (John Gielgud) is an exiled magician on a remote island, twelve years from the dukedom taken from him, with his daughter Miranda (Isabelle Pasco) and a library he carried into exile. Peter Greenaway adapts The Tempest so that Prospero speaks every other character's lines himself. When Miranda falls in love with the son of the man he hates most, the revenge he has spent years preparing starts to loosen in his hands.
