Marion Crane (Janet Leigh), a real estate clerk with little to show for her years of work, steals a wad of cash and drives out of town hoping to start over with her lover. Alfred Hitchcock puts her on the road at night, then at the Bates Motel, where the young manager Norman (Anthony Perkins) talks shyly and tends to his housebound mother. Marion only wanted a new life, and the money in her car is what she cannot put down.
