In 1933, bank robber John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) moves across the Midwest with precision and style, but the FBI under Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) is building a case that tightens with each job. Dillinger's lover Billie Frechette (Marion Cotillard) watches from inside his world as the net closes. Mann shoots the final confrontation in the dark outside a movie theater, Dillinger's body dropped on wet pavement under electric light.
