“I have a love in my life. It makes me stronger than anything you can imagine.”

Barry Egan (Adam Sandler) runs a small business and has a temper that goes off with no warning, and one morning a stranger leaves a harmonium on the curb outside his shop. Soon Lena Leonard (Emily Watson), a co-worker of one of his sisters, takes an interest in him, while a gang of scammers starts leaning on him for money. Paul Thomas Anderson treats love as a force that arrives with its own noise and fear, and that can lift a frightened man who has never had it.
