Paul Sheridan (Fred MacMurray), a police detective, is assigned to watch Lona McLane (Kim Novak), the girlfriend of a bank robber the department is hunting. Richard Quine has Paul and his partner Rick McAllister (Philip Carey) work the stakeout in shifts, listening in on a life that isn't theirs. Paul sits at his window with the lights out, Lona's face turned toward him.
