Al Reilly (Timothy Hutton) is a young assistant district attorney handed what looks like a routine file: a police shooting, and a veteran detective named Mike Brennan (Nick Nolte) who is the one holding the gun. Reilly starts building a case, and it leads to a former lover and Bobby Texador (Armand Assante), the crime boss who now looks after her. Sidney Lumet films New York in hard, grimy light, with the same unease in the interview rooms as on the street.
