Why would a married English couple in 1927 Paris open their home to a stranger? Marya Zelli (Isabelle Adjani) has to wonder, with her husband Stephan (Anthony Higgins) under arrest and no money left. H.J. Heidler (Alan Bates) and his wife Lois (Maggie Smith) make the offer, and James Ivory follows Marya into their household. She is young and alone, and she says yes because she has nowhere else to go.
