“Triumphant Return To The Screen!”

Queen Christina (Greta Garbo) rules Sweden, adored by her people, and she has started to slip away from her court to be somewhere no one knows her. On one of those trips she meets Antonio (John Gilbert), a Spanish envoy, and the two fall into an affair that her ministers, led by Oxenstierna (Lewis Stone), cannot be allowed to discover. Rouben Mamoulian stages the film in long, slow takes, and Garbo's face carries the weight.
