Matthias (Marin Grigore) quits his job in Germany and comes home to his Transylvanian village a few days before Christmas, wanting to be a closer father to his son Rudi, who carries fears nobody has sorted out. Cristian Mungiu sets it among Romanians, Hungarians and Germans, where new hires at the small factory begin to unsettle people. Matthias also wants to see Csilla (Judith State), his ex-lover, and whatever once held them together is still there.
