“Once was a man, a married man... Who couldn't see the danger Until one day, one fateful day... Along came a Tall, Dark Stranger!”

David "Big Davey" Harvey (William Holden), a widowed farmer on the early American frontier, wants a mother for his young son and a hand to keep the house, so he takes Rachel (Loretta Young), an indentured servant, as his wife. Norman Foster follows the two of them as they try to learn each other in a small cabin. Then Jim Fairways (Robert Mitchum) rides through, and what Rachel and Davey are only beginning to build is suddenly at risk.
