“It would be funny if it didn't hurt so much.”

Bob (Bruce Jones) is out of work and short of money, and his daughter Coleen (Gemma Phoenix) needs a First Communion dress that costs more than he can pay. He takes whatever jobs and favours he can find, and some of them are the kind he would rather his wife Anne (Julie Brown) not hear about. Ken Loach, working from Jim Allen's script, stays close to Bob as the day of the ceremony gets nearer and the dress hangs in the shop window.
