John Wickliff Shawnessy (Montgomery Clift) is a young idealist in 1859 Raintree County, Indiana, set to settle down with his high school sweetheart Nell Gaither (Eva Marie Saint). Then Susanna Drake (Elizabeth Taylor), a rich girl from New Orleans, arrives and pulls his attention away, and the Civil War is already coming for all of them. Edward Dmytryk stages it as a big MGM epic, with the Midwest and the South set against each other.
