“In a mad world, only the mad are sane.”
Why would a warlord who won his lands by force hand them over while he still lives? Hidetora Ichimonji (Tatsuya Nakadai), an aging lord in sixteenth-century Japan, splits his kingdom among his three sons, Taro (Akira Terao), Jiro (Jinpachi Nezu) and Saburo (Daisuke Ryū). Akira Kurosawa draws on King Lear here, and everything the old man built now rests on whether his sons honor the gift.
