“In a perfect world, they never would have met.”

A plane goes down over the Chesapeake, and in Washington two strangers are left holding what their spouses carried. Dutch Van Den Broeck (Harrison Ford), an internal affairs cop, and Kay Chandler (Kristin Scott Thomas), a congresswoman, learn that the two who died had been having an affair. Sydney Pollack follows them through the funerals, the questions neither can leave alone, and the plain evidence of the keys.
