In 1956, the young son of the wealthy Stannard family is kidnapped, and his father David (Glenn Ford) has the money to pay whatever is asked. Alex Segal directs the aftermath as a household under siege, with Edith (Donna Reed) and Police Chief Jim Backett (Robert Keith) watching what David will do. His answer to the kidnappers goes out on live television, in front of the whole town, and the boy's life rides on it.
