Rashomon
“The husband, the wife… or the bandit?”
A samurai is dead in a forest, and a priest (Minoru Chiaki) and a woodcutter (Takashi Shimura) sit out the rain trying to make sense of the trial. Akira Kurosawa lets four witnesses tell it, among them the bandit Tajômaru (Toshirō Mifune) and the dead man's wife, Masako (Machiko Kyō). Each account puts the same two people in the same grove, and the husband and wife are never seen the same way twice.
