Ratcatcher

James (William Eadie) is twelve, and since the summer an unspoken secret has made him a stranger in his own family. He drifts to the canal behind the Glasgow housing blocks, where he finds an awkward tenderness with Margaret Anne, a vulnerable fourteen-year-old, and an unlikely friendship with Kenny. Lynne Ramsay, in her first feature, shoots the 1970s tenement world up close and lets the quiet stretch between scenes carry the weight.
