Ana Garcia (America Ferrera) has just finished high school in East Los Angeles, with a chance at college and a mother who wants her married, having children, and working the family's small textile factory. Carmen Garcia (Lupe Ontiveros) pushes the factory on her anyway, so Ana spends her summer there, pushing back. Patricia Cardoso sets the argument among rundown sewing tables and the dresses that crowd them, the whole family in one room.
