“A comedy about love in the '90s”

Lelaina Pierce (Winona Ryder) graduates as valedictorian, then finds herself filming her friends and roommates for a documentary while she hunts for work that pays. Her circle includes Troy Dyer (Ethan Hawke), who has no interest in a career, and Michael Grates (Ben Stiller), an executive from a music network who takes an interest in her tapes. Stiller, directing for the first time, keeps the camera close to the group as they work out how to get by.
