Loxi Claiborne (Paulette Goddard) runs a salvage crew out of Key West in 1840, sending frail schooners onto the reefs after the hurricanes to haul in what the wrecked ships leave behind. Cecil B. DeMille fills the Technicolor frame with Ray Milland and John Wayne as the men who sail into her business. Every storm brings cargo to be claimed, and every wreck puts sailors and salvagers in the same water, with the shark-toothed coral below.
