A suburban family moves to a new town in 1955, hoping a fresh start will keep their teenage son out of trouble. Jim Stark (James Dean) befriends the troubled Plato (Sal Mineo), falls for Judy (Natalie Wood), and makes an enemy of her boyfriend, Buzz. Nicholas Ray films it in CinemaScope, and Jim spends it looking for one adult who will give him a straight answer.
