“Not since Gone with the Wind has there been a great romantic epic like it!”

John Reed (Warren Beatty), an American journalist, leaves for Russia to report on the revolution and carries his hope of bringing it home to the working class. Louise Bryant (Diane Keaton), a writer whose own ambitions he has never quite made room for, is the person he keeps returning to. Warren Beatty follows Reed's years of travel and strikes, and the film leaves the man himself caught between his politics and her.
