François (Louis Garrel) is twenty, a poet in Paris in 1968, and he wants to stay out of the army without giving up the revolution he has just watched fill the streets. He joins the barricades but won't throw a Molotov cocktail at the police, then retreats to a friend's flat to smoke opium and talk. Philippe Garrel follows him into the year after, when he meets the sculptor Lilie (Clotilde Hesme) and nothing is asked of him except to keep writing.
