Rembrandt

“He knew all women! Their lives...Loves...Their souls!”

Amsterdam in the mid 1600s, and Rembrandt van Rijn (Charles Laughton) is the city's most famous painter, with patrons lining up for portraits. Then his wife dies, and his canvases turn dark, which offends the same patrons who made him rich. Gertrude Lawrence and Elsa Lanchester play the women in his household, and Korda gives the painter's life the weight of a character study.
