Just before Christmas in 1940, a shoplifting trial is postponed until after the holiday, and assistant district attorney Jack Sargent (Fred MacMurray) can't stomach leaving the defendant, Lee Leander (Barbara Stanwyck), in a jail cell. He takes her home to his mother (Beulah Bondi) and Aunt Emma (Elizabeth Patterson), where she is a stranger at the table. Mitchell Leisen directs Preston Sturges's script at an easy pace and keeps the family kitchen warm.
