Bo Lockley (Michael Moriarty) is a rookie detective in the New York City Police Department, handed a missing person case that looks like his first real assignment. The girl he is told to find is Patty Butler (Susan Blakely), who is living with the dealer Thomas "Stick" Henderson (Tony King) as an undercover cop, and nobody tells Bo. Milton Katselas puts the two on a collision course through the city, where each of them is working toward the other without knowing it.
