Respect
“Find out what it means.”
A girl who sings in her father's church choir in Detroit already has a voice the grown-ups in the pews stop to hear, and nobody can say where it comes from. Liesl Tommy follows Aretha Franklin (Jennifer Hudson) through the death of her mother and the pull of her father, C. L. Franklin (Forest Whitaker). By the time she meets Ted White (Marlon Wayans), the voice is the only thing she fully owns, and her marriage and her career both want it.
