Sunny von Bülow (Glenn Close) lies in a coma in a Newport mansion, and her husband Claus (Jeremy Irons) has been convicted of trying to murder her. Claus insists he is innocent and hires the Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz (Ron Silver), who gathers a team of students to take apart the evidence for an appeal. Barbet Schroeder follows the case through medical records and old testimony, and Claus has his freedom and his name to lose.
