Rhapsody in August

(1991)Directed by Akira Kurosawa98 min · PGDrama
“Tears. Laughter. Innocence. It was a summer of remembering.”

Kane (Sachiko Murase) is an old woman in Nagasaki who survived the 1945 bombing, and this summer she has her four grandchildren to herself. The children start asking questions about that day, and Akira Kurosawa lets her answers come out slowly, in the long pauses between them. Then word arrives of a brother in Hawaii who wants to see her before he dies, and the family has to decide what they still owe each other.
